01.11.2019 – 03.11.2019
During the Young Art Weekend, six venues for contemporary art from Nijmegen will present a selection of this year’s art school graduates. After visiting all Dutch art academies we will invite recent bachelors and masters of art to make and present their work during a long weekend dedicated to exciting new art. Every venue will select and work according to its own character and traditions. Our joined public will then be guided from space to space during an engaging tour. Together, we strive to organize a weekend filled with new conversations, opportunities, ideas and festive collaborations.

Expoplu presents the exhibition ‘Monumental Fluxus’ at the Besiendershuis in Nijmegen, with work of Elena Chemerska (Master institute of Visual Cultures, St. Joost, Den Bosch) and Astrid Feringa (Non-linear Narrative, KABK, Den Haag).
Monumental Fluxus wants to reconsider the physical state of monuments and tries to expose how the ideologies keep the underlying meaning and understanding of monuments in never-ending state of flux. People will always be willing to pick up the pen of history to rewrite the stories, the ideas, motivations or beliefs that are at the core of the monument for the confirmation of their own beliefs or ideas on truth. What does it mean to destroy or revitalize and rebuild cultural heritage such as monuments? And when can we say these actions are morally good or bad, or is this difficult to determine?
Similar questions lie at the core of the artistic researches of both Astrid Feringa as Elena Chemerska. The exhibition aims to stimulate our thinking about these issues in a broader way of thinking than only by focusing on the Besiendershuis, or the city of Nijmegen. However, the specific time and place acts as contexture for the conceptual outline of the works and the exhibition.
Monumental Fluxus is curated by Youri Appelo.
